Richie Hawtin as Plastikman releases SYNK app
19/03/10 12:59 from Mixmag - The world's biggest dance music and clubbing magazine

If you're planning on catching any of Richie Hawtin's new Plastikman shows you may wish to download the app to accompany it.
It all sounds rather nerdy to us but here are the app's live performance interaction components:

LOGIKAL - This invites the audience to re-organize the word samples using a user interface of 20 touch buttons. In this state the centre of performance control is moved from the stage and into the audience.

KAMERA - Accessible throughout the show this gives users a live video stream of an internal perspective of the performance.

SYNKOTIK - Explore the synkronicity of realtime-generated percussion patterns and their visual counterparts, integrating the stage LED wall and the built in displays on each SYNK activated iPhone/iPod Touch.

KONSOLE - Active during the entire show with realtime performance information. At specific moments an extended Konsole state becomes activated, allowing further insight into the realtime programming of the performance’s drum and percussive elements, while also providing visual feedback of musical and effect parameters. A simplified remote Konsole is available to all SYNK users worldwide and will be activated during all Plastikman Live performances.

Participants should connect to the Plastikman Wi-Fi network at each peformance and will be notified of the activation of the different states by their iPhone/iPod Touch at specific moments during the show.

The SYNK experience will not be limited to viewers of the live show. In between the performances the SYNK application will be in sleeper mode and function as a Plastikman atmospheric location shifter.

The app is available now on iTunes.

Win a holiday by keeping safe in the sun with Club 18-30
19/03/10 12:03 from Mixmag - The world's biggest dance music and clubbing magazine

Mixmag and Don’t Stay In have teamed up with the 'Sex. Worth Talking About' campaign and Club 18-30, to offer one lucky winner a week's holiday for them and a mate to the island of their choice – Ibiza, Kos, Corfu, Rhodes or Crete.

For those jetting off abroad this summer, effective protection for a week in the sun shouldn’t just mean using the right factor sun lotion. It’s about being prepared for every eventuality.

Research shows that you're more likely to get down to it with a new person more quickly on holiday than you would at home. So, whether you think a fling is on the cards or not, the best way to stay safe and healthy is to slip a pack of condoms into your suitcase before you go.

If you do end up having to buy some while you’re out there, make sure they have a CE mark meaning they’ve been tested to the high safety standards required in Europe.

Condoms, or 'condons' as they are known in Spain, are the best and most effective way to protect you from STIs. Wherever you’re going this summer, make sure you come home with great memories – not an STI!

To enter this comp just tell us what the Spanish word for condom is? Text the word MIXMAG followed by either Condon, Kondom or JonnyForeign to 81066. Texts cost 50p plus your normal standard rate. We'll pick a winner on April 1 - that's in two weeks time.

The 'Sex. Worth Talking About' campaign works in partnership with Club 18-30 to provide information on sexual health to holidaymakers. Prize includes flights from Gatwick or Manchester and 7 nights SC/BB accommodation. Holidays must be taken between May 26 - June 20. Normal Mixmag Ts and Cs apply.

For straightforward information and advice to make it easier to discuss everything to do with sexual health visit www.nhs.uk/worthtalkingabout

Office of Fair Trading warn of festival scams
18/03/10 09:29 from Mixmag - The world's biggest dance music and clubbing magazine

The Office of Fair Trading have asked us to pass on the details of their new campaign named Just Tick It (someone ring Nike's legal team).

They urges festival-goers buying tickets online to tick off these top tips from OFT's advice service Consumer Direct to make sure they are buying the real deal:

1. How has the website got the tickets to sell? Check with the festival to find out when tickets are being released for sale and when the tickets will be sent out
2. What are others saying about the website? Search the internet to find out what other people’s experiences have been
3. How can you contact the company? Check that you know their full geographic address and check they have a working land-line phone number
4. Can they provide ticket details? Ensure that the face value of the tickets and the seat location/festival area are clearly listed
5. Do they provide refunds? Make sure there is a refund policy in case something goes wrong

Police say teen deaths may be linked to mephedrone
17/03/10 11:33 from Mixmag - The world's biggest dance music and clubbing magazine

Post-mortem examinations are being carried out on the bodies of two teenagers whose deaths are suspected to be linked to mephedrone.

Louis Wainwright, 18, and 19-year-old Nicolas Smith both died on Monday. Both had taken mephedrone, known locally as M-CAT.

Police have made three arrests in connection with incident. One of the arrested men is currently in hospital and is thought to have taken the drug.

Det Ch Insp Mark Oliver, told locals "We would encourage anyone who may have taken the drug or knows somebody who has taken the drug to attend a local hospital as a matter of urgency."

The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) claim the legal high has the same dangers as Class A drugs while Lord Mandelson has today added mephedrone will be examined 'very speedily, very carefully'. Presumably he already knows a sub-committee of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs are due to report back to the Home Office this month following an examination of the drug.

For more on mephedrone and the results of Mixmag's Drugs Survey see here.

Eddy Grant claims he's been ripped off by Gorillaz
16/03/10 11:40 from Mixmag - The world's biggest dance music and clubbing magazine

'Electric Avenue' singer, Eddy Grant claims he has been plagiarised by Gorillaz. Incidentally, the made up band are also on his label, EMI.

Eddy says “I am outraged that the Gorillaz have infringed the copyright of my song 'Time Warp' claiming their song 'Stylo' to be an original composition. My song sits almost note to note with their release and is a blatant rip off. 'Time Warp' is a very popular song and has been a staple of the DJ scene for many years and I feel total disrespect from Gorillaz and their management company, especially as they are an established act."

He goes on "I am very angry that this was not picked up by our mutual publisher EMI ‘s administration division. I do not blame my publishers but, the state of the industry at the current time with all labels and publishers folding into one and becoming incestuous. It’s such an obvious copy that from day one the band and their management should have taken control of this situation with EMI Publishing. I would like the outcome to be that the band admits that they have lifted my song, that I have a full credit for the song and an apology from the band.”

Good luck with that apology from 'the band' Eddy. *whispers* They're not real!

New tour blog and top tracks from Tiësto
16/03/10 11:37 from Mixmag - The world's biggest dance music and clubbing magazine

For the UK leg of his world tour DJ Tiesto is blogging for Mixmag. Here's his latest entry.

"My second weekend in the UK was fantastic, Three packed 3 shows: Thursday in London, Friday in Cardiff and last night in Liverpool.

In London I played at a historic venue called Brixton Academy. It's one of those really cool old theatres with the large stair cases on the sides of the stage and the angled floor up to the back wall. I love the history of the place. It used to be a movie theater back in the 30's, then bands started playing there years. All my favorite bands have played here at one time or another, so it was exciting to do a show here. The venue is smaller than than I usually play in London, but that made for a way more intimate evening. The show was great. It had it's own pace and kept on building throughout the night. By the end of it, the energy was powerful. London is always a really busy city for me, a lot of friends and business to take care of in that city! My crew came out and helped me start the night off in the dressing room with champagne and they have a pool table in the dressing room. I'm pretty good with the stick!
Second city I played this weekend was Cardiff. Dada life opened for me tonight again, its great having those guys around on my UK Shows. They did 3 weeks with me in the US and its always a lot of fun. The stage was quite a maze to get to here, with make shift stairs coming from the dressing room to the stage. During my set, a large piece of my staging came loose and bumped the screens. Crazy!
Luckily the awesome crew in Cardiff got it fixed up quickly and the show went on with out a hitch.

My final show was in the city by the sea, Liverpool! I played at Echo Arena. It's right on the water and has a beautiful view of the area, with a large ferris wheel is built in the parking lot next to the venue and at night it lit the whole area up. I saw similar ones in Melbourne and London. I guess everyone loves Ferris Wheels! Tonight was pretty crazy. The crowd was amazing, but I struggled a bit with some technical difficulties. My CD players kept on breaking and it drove me nuts! I saw a Dutch flag with my face on it that said 'The King!'! Pretty great. I’ve seen that guy at several shows over the years, such a die-hard fan!

So much fun this weekend...now I finally get to go to Dublin! All I’ve heard for the last 2 weeks is how insane that show will be. It sold out a long time ago and it’s the biggest show we’re doing in the UK. Its also 2 days after St. Pattys Day, hopefully everyone’s still partying when I get there!"

Top Tracks:
1.Trouble Is (Tiësto Remix)- TurboWeekend
2. Papillon (Tiësto Remix)- The Editors
3. Century- Tiësto feat Calvin Harris

Sosho in Shoreditch gutted in fire
12/03/10 11:57 from Mixmag - The world's biggest dance music and clubbing magazine

One of Shoreditch's most infamous bars, Sosho, has been destroyed in a fire that started 24 hours ago.

Tabernacle Street in East London is still closed off and firefighters are still damping down hot patches this morning.

The bar/club, that claims to once be voted Time Out's best bar, has been completely destroyed in the blaze. It was best know for its infamous Sunday night afterparty, Retox.

Owner Jonathan Downey said "The fire's caused millions of pounds of damage, both to the building and to business. The bar's just been kitted out with some great antique furniture which is all irreplaceable and about £50,000 worth of artwork has been destroyed."

"Both places are open seven days a week and have 24 hour licences. They've both been really busy, even in the current economic climate, so this is going to cost us massively," he said.

Optimo in Glasgow to hold last event in April
12/03/10 11:39 from Mixmag - The world's biggest dance music and clubbing magazine

One of Glasgow's longest running and best respected club nights is to hold its last event next month.

Optimo at The Sub Club has put on around 650 nights.

They told us yesterday "We have loved doing Optimo with all our hearts, but our hearts are also telling us it is time to call a halt to it. Playing at, organising and promoting a weekly night takes up an enormous amount of energy and there are so many other things we want to do that some of that energy is needed for our other projects."

Sunday April 25 will be the last ever Optimo.
