Creative Commons Music Wiki Needs Contributors The Creative Commons Music Wiki was set up by our webmaster 3 years ago when there was a lack of directories on CC licensed music and netlabels. Today it is still lacking in content, so if you think you could add to it then hop along and make some contributions to the wiki. Any questions? Ask below in the comments box.

Don't Be Fooled By Dodgy MP3 Sites Have you seen the amount of free MP3 websites offering to “Send to Ringtone”? Don’t be fooled by this, most of these websites are dodgy and most likely illegal. I have found loads of BDWRekordings.com tracks showing up on these sites by simply doing a google and what makes me think they are illegal is my tracks where listed alongside commercial tracks which would never be available to download for free. The “Send to Ringtone” links are only adverts and none of the artists of this website make a cut of the profits if, and that’s a BIG IF, our tracks are sold as ringtones from them. NO deals have been made by any of our artists to do with these website. Whilst BDWRekordings.com artists allow for websites to host and share their music (mostly for non-commercial purposes - see license) they DO NOT allow their tracks to used for missleading advertising or selling of their tracks as ringtones. So watch yourself on these websites, you might just get stung.

Do you allow your music to be used in videos? Yes and you can use them royalty free, just as long as you follow the rules of the creative commons license. Such as NC or Non-commercial licensed tracks must not be used to make money such as placing ads within videos being used to advertise or have ads placed in or on them. However, any tracks licensed with ND or No Derivatives license cannot used in videos as a video is classed as a derivative. Anymore questions on this please ask below in the comments section.

Royalty Free NOT Copyright Free It has come to my attention that some people think that music on this website or Creative Commons licensed music are copyright free. They are wrong! There is a difference between being royalty free and copyright free and music licensed using Creative Commons (such as the music on this website) are royalty free under certain conditions of the license. Releasing music under CC licenses DOES NOT remove copyright, it is a license that allows people to do things with the music that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to do if the license wan’t applied. Click on the license icon which will be on the page of the track and see what you can and cannot do with it. Also, when using CC music you must credit the music with a link back to the original. I hope that clears that up. Enjoy the free music :)

Change To Less Restricted Licenses I have decided to use only the less restrictive Creative Commons licenses such as CC-BY and CC-BY-NC for all future tracks. The reason for doing this is to get other artists and media creators interested in using the works on this website in their own projects such as remixes, DJ mixes and videos. This is something that CC licenses with the SA and ND rules either put content creators off or rule out usage completely. Also, i’m planning to get in touch with artists with works already on the netlabel whether they want to change to the less restrictive licenses. What do you think about this idea? Are you more likely to use our artists works using less restrictive CC Licenses?

Neither the... Oh Dear, Audio Player Doesn’t Work on Wii U. Neither the Flash player or HTML5 audio players work in the new Wii U browser. After all the work i did to make it compatible with most browsers by using both Flash and HTML5 audio players Nintendo don’t bother adding audio streaming or flash support in the new Wii U browser. Looks like i will have to add use video imbeds as a fall forward for the browser. Sorry folks but this will take a while.

Goodbye Public Domain? The US Supreme Court has recently ruled that Congress can re-copyright works that are in the Public Domain. This is going to affect many netaudio artists as many of them use Public Domain audio to create new works. With this new ruling how are we going to tell which works are in the Public Domain and which aren’t? Sample use or covering of old music could get messy.
